“[Chickens] are a great role model for teens. They wake up early, work hard turning trash into treasure, and go to bed early.” -Joel Salatin

When you hear the word “chicken,” the image that pops into your head is probably a standard, white, meat chicken that spends its life inside a building all day. But a backyard flock is so much more than that. My chickens bring a lot of joy into my life and here are ten reasons why every other teenage girl needs a flock of chickens too!

1.    Chickens lay delicious eggs. Even if you don’t typically enjoy eggs, you’ll be surprised by how good fresh eggs look and taste. The first day you go into the coop and find that your chickens have started laying will be a day you never forget!

2.    Once you start getting enough eggs to feed your family you can start selling eggs. Almost everybody loves buying fresh eggs, and selling them is a great way to earn some extra money.

3.    Taking care of chickens is a {fun} responsibility. You learn how to go out there every day and make sure your sweet babies have everything they need to be happy and healthy.

4.    Unless you’re planning on keeping your chickens inside, taking care of your flock ensures that you are getting outside everyday. Even though waking up is sometimes hard, there is nothing more peaceful, relaxing, and refreshing, than being outside in the quiet of the morning.

5.    Having chickens can teach you valuable life skills. Chickens teach you hard work, staying on a schedule, and taking care of a family. It is so rewarding to watch your chickens and know that you have taken good care of those delicate lives.

6.    Chickens may not seem very smart but they are very sweet. Chickens are super soft and cuddly. If you’re ever sad, you’re chickens will always be there to cheer you up!

7.    Chickens are beautiful and they come in so many different varieties and colors. Watching your chickens as they go about their day is actually really cute. You can see that they are so perfectly designed as they scratch around for food, take “baths” in the dirt, and get comfortable in their nesting box to lay any egg.

8.    You know all those bugs that come around when the weather starts to get warm? Chickens are happy to devour those bugs and clean up the area for you. They eat any impressive amount of bugs in a short amount of time and they can even eat small snakes.

9.    Chickens can also provide the perfect start to the most amazing compost. I know that chicken poop is the less glamorous part of keeping chickens but it really is useful. You can compost it for your garden or if you don’t have a garden, as crazy as it sounds there are people who will want your chicken manure for their garden!

  1.  As Joel Salatin said in his quote, chickens are great role models! They wake up bright and early so that they can spend their day de-bugging your home and laying eggs for you. Then they go to sleep early so that they can wake up the next day and do it for you all over again!

So it turns out that chickens are hardworking, funny, beautiful, and useful! Whether you like them for their practical purposes or whether you enjoy taking care of them like pets, chickens are all around amazing creatures and every girl needs a flock of these special birds!
